Networking Advice from an Industry Gem
Interview with Jennifer Ocampo-King, Managing Director, Head of Securities Lending, TD Securities
Jenn is universally loved in the industry for a reason - she has built an enviable network by being authentic, caring and generous. No sweaty-handed conferences or small talk required. Just genuine connections, one at a time.
1.How did discover early in your career that authenticity leads to success?
Being your true self shines through and attracts people to connect with you on a genuine, human level. I always lead with empathy and with a mindset of, "Why not try"? I tell my amazing daughter the same thing; always go for it, always try! The worst that can happen is nothing. With a positive work ethic and attitude, you can do anything you set your mind to. Getting the chance to work in this industry gave me confidence and I didn’t know any other way other than to be myself.
2. How has making connections changed now that you are the one people want to meet?
It hasn’t. I love connecting with people - it lights me up. When someone new joins the firm (at any level), I send out an email to welcome them and ask to connect. I am still connecting with people from the same intent – out of genuine interest in others and trying to be helpful and welcoming. When I first started in the business, I remember that feeling of being welcomed and I want to pay that forward.
3. What is your best advice to expand connections?
Volunteering is one of the best ways to meet people organically. Find something you love, a good cause and bring your best self to the table. I didn’t wait to for someone to ask me to get involved. I raised my hand to help. People saw that I could lead, and they asked me to get involved in other things. You learn so much about others and yourself and you create a special bond working on initiatives that help our community.
